Auto-Tune is a pitch correction technology invented by Andy Hildebrand. Hildebrand used algorithms to help oil giant Exxon find new drilling sites. He retired from Exxon and started Antares Audio Technology. He realized that the same technology he used to map the geological subsurface could be applied to pitch correction and Auto-Tune was born. Auto-Tune is a processor that slightly shifts pitches to the nearest true correct semitone. It was originally invented to discreetly correct the tone of the singer. Auto-Tune had been on the market for about a year doing it’s job behind the scenes correcting pitch and tone when in 1998 Cher used Auto-Tune in her song “Believe.” In true Cher form there was nothing discreet about the way she used it. Auto-Tune was showcased in the song and gave a robotic echo to the sound of her voice. Most people in music credit this song with the start of the Auto-Tune revolution.
Since 1998 Auto-Tune has evolved and does much more than it was originally intended to do. Auto-Tune can add warmth, breathiness, increase presence, add alienized vocals, and allow the user to “literally design your own new vocal sound.” Cher used Auto-Tune in a few specific places in her song, just enough to make it different and grab the attention of the listener. Travis Scott uses Auto-Tune throughout the entire song both in the background vocals and the lead vocals. Using Auto-Tune has become the norm in music. It is believed that Auto-Tune is found in 99% of pop music today. “Auto-Tune is indisputably the sound of the 21st century so far.” People either love it or hate it but it has become the defining sound of our time.
Auto-Tune has impacted many aspects of music particularly the vocals.
Pitch has obviously been changed in that if a singers pitch is off Auto-Tune has the ability to correct that by adjusting the degree of highness or lowness of the note. Even singers who might be having an off day will sound in tune and clear with the help of Auto-Tune. Correcting slight imperfections keeps the listener from being distracted and more focused on the emotions in the song.
